When inspecting a vehicle with power steering, you should inspect the hoses, pumps, and fluid levels. Specifically check the hoses for leaks.

You should test the tractor protection valve by allowing the air supply to properly charge, turning off the engine, then releasing air from the system by pressing the brake pedal several times. The tractor protection valve should move into its emergency position when psi drops to an unsafe level.

Ice that is wet because it has just begun to melt is much more slippery than ice that is not wet. Use additional caution when driving on melting ice.

If you must drive in fog, you should use your low beam headlights and fog lights to maximize your visibility. Using high beam lights will only make it more difficult for you to see.

When starting a trip, be sure that all shut-off valves are in the open position, except for the last valves on the rear trailer. It is important that air reaches the brakes on all trailers and that the air is not able to escape from the back of the vehicle.

Potential problems to check for when inspecting brakes include cracked drums; shoes or pads with oil, grease, or brake fluid on them; and shoes that are missing, broken, or worn dangerously thin.

It is essential that your low pressure warning light function properly. After allowing the system to charge, you can test the warning signal by rapidly applying and releasing the brake pedal. This will release air from the braking system and the warning signal should come on when pressure drops to a dangerous level.

Air brakes consists of three separate braking systems: the service brake system, the parking brake system, and the emergency brake system.

If a converter dolly has air brakes, you can release the brakes by opening the dolly air tank petcock. Releasing the dolly's brakes is the first step you should take when properly positioning the dolly in front of the rear trailer.

Because the weight of cargo gives them a higher center of gravity, fully-loaded rigs are 10 times more likely to roll over in a crash than empty rigs.

For the first step of a vehicle inspection, you should review the last inspection report on your vehicle, if there is one. The carrier should have repaired any problems noted on the report.

If at least one-fourth of the leaves in a leaf spring are missing, the vehicle will be put out-of-service until the defect is fixed.
