Blocking and bracing are used to prevent cargo from shifting in transit.

When crossing railroad tracks during the on-road driving skills test, you must not stop, switch gears, pass another vehicle, or change lanes while any part of your vehicle is in the crossing.

Stopping distance is affected by a vehicle's speed. The faster you are driving, the longer your stopping distance will become.

If you are being tailgated, it is best to allow more room to open up in front of your vehicle. This will help you avoid the need for sudden stops, which could result in the tailgater rear-ending you, and will make it easier for the tailgater to pass. If any of these components are not belt-driven, you must tell the examiner which one(s), and verify that they are operating properly, mounted securely, and not damaged or leaking.

When inspecting your vehicle's engine, check the belts for tightness and excessive wear. The amount of "give" that is safe for each belt in a given engine will vary, so learn what is appropriate for your vehicle.

Smoking, eating, or drinking are distracting activities and should be avoided while you are driving. Instead, plan ahead and allow yourself time to stop to eat when making a lengthy trip.

To reduce the chances of becoming fatigued on a long trip, a driver should stop for a break at least once every two hours or 100 miles driven.

It is important to know the maximum air loss rate that is safe for your specific vehicle. A triple combination should have a leakage rate no higher than 6 psi in a minute during an applied leakage test.

Cargo on flatbed trailers or trailers without sides must be tied down to prevent it from shifting or falling in transit.

If you must come to a stop before making a turn during the driving skills test, you should come to a smooth stop behind any stop line, crosswalk, or stop sign. Keep your front wheels aimed straight ahead and do not let your vehicle roll. If stopping behind another vehicle, stop where you are still able to see the rear tires of the vehicle ahead of you.

Potential problems to check for when inspecting brakes include cracked drums; shoes or pads with oil, grease, or brake fluid on them; and shoes that are missing, broken, or worn dangerously thin.

You must use the proper number of tie-downs when securing cargo on a flatbed trailer. Examples of tie-down equipment includes ropes, straps, and chains.

Parking brakes should not be used in very wet weather when temperatures are below freezing. The brakes could become frozen in place, making it impossible to move the vehicle.

If you choose to use a mobile phone while operating a CMV, you may only use a hands-free mobile phone that is located close to you. However, even a hands-free mobile phone can be a dangerous distraction while driving. Make sure you are aware of all cell phone laws in the state in which you are driving.

Subject to certain conditions, a CDL is not required to operate military vehicles, authorized emergency vehicles, farm equipment, or recreational vehicles. It is also not required for operating a straight truck that contains only your personal property that you are not selling.

Because air expands when hot, tire pressure increases as temperatures increase. This can sometimes result in tire failure. Consistently check your tire pressure when making a trip in hot weather.

When inspecting your tires, verify that there is at least 4/32 of an inch of tread depth in every major groove on the front tires, and tread depth of at least 2/32 of an inch on the other tires. Tires on the same vehicle should all be the same size.

Drivers with blocked vision may pose hazards to others on the road. Examples of such drivers include those who haven't scraped ice off of their windshields; those driving vehicles loaded with large items blocking the windows; and those who are driving rental trucks without being used to the limited rear visibility of a truck.

The parking brake in a vehicle with air brakes should be used every time the vehicle is parked.

A one-way check valve is required to be between an air compressor and the first main reservoir. This valve prevents air from escaping the system if the air compressor develops a leak.

The total stopping distance for vehicles equipped with air brakes is made up of four factors: perception distance, reaction distance, brake lag distance, and braking distance. When braking at a speed of 55 mph while driving on dry pavement, the brake lag can add around 32 feet to a vehicle's total stopping distance.

During the basic vehicle control skills test, a pull-up will be scored any time an applicant stops and pulls forward to gain a better position. Stopping without changing direction will not. An excessive number of pull-ups will count as errors.

It is particularly important that you downshift before starting down a hill or entering a curve.

On vehicles with Anti-Lock Braking Systems (ABS), yellow malfunction lamps alert the driver to ABS malfunction.
