Not enough to pass :-(

Ouch! While you were on a roll there for a few questions, you didn’t pass this time. But I know this test, and I think you’ll pass next time. Really.

1. School buses:
Are never equipped with ABS.
Are only equipped with ABS if students who are younger than 10 years of age will be on the bus.
May be equipped with ABS.

In general, school buses manufactured after 1998 or 1999 must be equipped with an Anti-Lock Braking System (ABS). Many older buses are equipped with ABS as well.

2. If a driver needs to exit a school bus to ensure all waiting students have boarded, the driver should:
Leave the bus running.
Turn the bus off and take the key.
Ask a student to keep an eye on the steering wheel.

While students are boarding a school bus, if the driver cannot account for a student outside, they should secure the bus, take the key with them, and check around and underneath the bus for the missing student.

3. If your bus has a manual transmission, what should you never do when crossing railroad tracks?
Change gears.
Use the brakes.
Look both ways.

Do not shift gears while crossing railroad tracks. Your vehicle could stall and get stuck in the crossing.

4. During a basic vehicle control skills test, a look is when:
A driver checks the gauges on their instrument panel.
A driver checks their blind spots.
A driver walks to the back of their vehicle to check its position.

A driver uses a look when they open their door, leave their seated position, and walk to the back of the vehicle to check its position. During the straight line backing exercise, a driver may not exceed one look. During any other exercise, a driver may not exceed two looks.

5. If a tornado is approaching and there is no nearby shelter, where should students go?
To a nearby ditch
To the closest tree
Near a river

If students are evacuated due to a school bus being in the direct path of a sighted tornado, the driver should lead them to shelter in a nearby building. If no such shelter is available, the driver should escort them to a nearby ditch or culvert. They should avoid areas that may be subject to flash flooding and should be far enough away from the bus that it would not fall on them if it tipped over.

6. Loading and unloading a bus:
Can be hazardous for passengers.
Does not need to be supervised.
Should be done while refueling.

More students are killed each year during loading or unloading of school buses than while riding on school buses. Therefore, it is critical that school bus drivers follow appropriate safety procedures during loading and unloading.

7. When completing a driver's side parallel parking maneuver, you should:
Pull forward directly into the parking space.
Back up past the parking space, then pull forward into it.
Pull forward past the parking space, then back into it.

You may be asked to complete a parallel parking maneuver into a parking space that is to the left of your vehicle. You should drive past the parking space before backing into it while bringing the rear of your vehicle as close to the rear of the space as possible. Your vehicle should be completely within the boundaries of the space.

8. When exiting a vehicle, a driver should:
Hop directly from their seat to the ground.
Maintain at least one point of contact with their vehicle.
Be turned to face their vehicle.

When exiting your vehicle during the basic vehicle control skills test, you must face the vehicle and maintain three points of contact at all times. If your testing vehicle is a bus, you must maintain contact with the handrail. Exiting the vehicle incorrectly may result in automatic failure of the basic vehicle control skills test.

9. If your bus is equipped with a roof-mounted strobe light, it should be used:
In times of limited visibility.
All the time.
Only at night.

If equipped, a school bus's roof-mounted strobe light should be used when conditions create an environment of limited visibility.

10. Properly adjusted crossover mirrors allow you to see all of the following, except:
The right and left front tires touching the ground.
The area in front of the bus.
The tops of the right and left rear tires.

Properly adjusted crossover mirrors on a school bus should allow the driver to see the entire area in front of the bus, from the front bumper at ground level to a point where direct vision is possible. The mirrors should also display the right and left front tires touching the ground, as well as the area from the front of the bus to the service door.

11. When performing a pre-trip inspection and looking into the fifth wheel gap, you should:
Make sure there is a gap between the kingpin and the locking jaws.
Make sure the locking jaws are fully closed around the kingpin.
Make sure the locking jaws are loose.

When inspecting a tractor/trailer coupling, look into the fifth wheel gap and make sure the locking jaws are fully closed around the kingpin.

12. During the driving test, the examiner will be scoring you on:
How well-spoken you are.
How quickly you arrive to your destination.
General driving behavior.

During the on-road driving test, the examiner will be score you on specific driving maneuvers as well as on your general driving behavior. You must drive in a safe and responsible manner; obey all traffic signs, signals, and laws; and not cause an accident or commit a moving violation.

13. When completing an offset back/right parking maneuver, you should:
Pull straight forward, then drive straight back.
Drive straight back, then pull forward to the left.
Pull straight forward, then back to the right.

If you are asked to complete an offset back/right parking maneuver, you should first pull straight forward, then back up to the right. Your vehicle must be parked completely within the boundaries of the parking space.

14. If your vehicle's ABS is malfunctioning:
You will not have any working brakes.
You will still have brakes.
You should only use the parking brake.

Anti-lock brakes are meant to keep a vehicle's wheels from locking up during hard applications. If your vehicle's Anti-Lock Braking System (ABS) malfunctions, its standard braking functions should still be in place. You should continue to drive and brake in a normal manner.

15. When students are being picked up by a school bus:
The students should wait at a designated bus stop.
The driver should pick up students whether or not they are at the designated bus stop.
The parents should choose where the bus stop will be located.

A school bus driver should load and unload students only at designated stops that have been approved by appropriate school district officials.

16. When students are boarding a school bus, the driver should do all of the following, except:
Check all mirrors for students rushing toward the bus.
Count the number of students at the bus stop and ensure all have boarded.
Allow student to board in pairs.

When approaching a bus stop, a school bus driver should count the number of students waiting and ensure that they all board the bus. The driver should check their mirrors for any students who may be running to the stop. Students should board slowly in a single-file line.

17. If a school bus needs to be evacuated, passengers should :
Always exit through the rear door.
Use the exit deemed safest.
Always exit through the front door.

When preparing to evacuate a school bus, the driver must quickly determine which of the bus's exits is safest for passengers to use.

18. During the driving test, when encountering a railroad crossing, you should:
Pass another vehicle on the tracks if the other vehicle is going too slow.
Get out of the vehicle to check for a train.
Not change gears while your vehicle is on the tracks.

During the on-road driving test, do not stop, change gears, pass another vehicle, or change lanes while any part of your vehicle is in a railroad crossing.

19. As students exit a school bus, the driver should watch to ensure that they:
Are leaving in pairs.
Do not get caught on the handrail or door.
Do not talk while exiting.

It is possible for students to be injured, or even killed, as a result of their clothing, accessories, or bodies getting caught on a handrail or door while exiting a school bus. The driver should closely watch students as they exit to ensure that they have all unloaded the bus successfully and have reached a safe location.

20. The overhead rearview mirror is located:
On the right side of a bus.
On the steering wheel of a bus.
Above the windshield inside a bus.

On a school bus, the overhead inside rearview mirror is mounted directly above the windshield on the driver’s side of the bus. This mirror should be used to monitor students inside the bus.
