When stopping, it is best to gradually press down the brake pedal.

A bus should not be refueled while passengers are on board unless it is absolutely necessary. In particular, a bus with passengers on board should never be refueled inside an enclosed building.

If you must drive onto the shoulder to avoid a hazard, stay on it until you come to a stop; then signal, check your mirrors, and merge back into traffic. Avoid braking on the shoulder at speeds higher than about 20 mph. To help maintain control, always keep one set of wheels on the pavement, if possible.

Strategies to help you avoid distracted driving include pre-programming radio stations; planning out your route in advance; avoiding complex or emotionally taxing conversation while driving; adjusting your mirrors before setting out; and not eating, drinking, or smoking while behind the wheel.

When checking your tires as part of a pre-trip inspection, it is important to verify that the tire pressure is neither too low nor too high.

In heavy traffic, it is safest to travel at the same speed as other vehicles. If two vehicles continue to drive in the same direction at the same speed, they cannot hit each other.

Backing a commercial motor vehicle is always dangerous because you cannot see everything behind you. When backing, make frequent checks of the mirrors on both sides of the vehicle.

As the temperature begins to rise and ice on the road begins to melt, the road surface will often become even more slippery. Water from the slight melting will sit on top of the ice, decreasing the available traction even more. Always decrease your speed and drive with caution when traveling on slippery surfaces.

You should stay in the right lane of a multilane road if your vehicle is being slowed down by a heavy load. Allow other vehicles to pass your truck using the left lane.

During the vehicle inspection test, you will be asked to do a complete inspection of your vehicle. You will need to explain what you are inspecting and why.

To avoid overusing your brakes, you should always shift into a lower gear before starting down a hill.

While regular mirror checks should be a part of your driving routine, it is particularly important to check your mirrors when changing lanes, turning, merging, and making tight maneuvers.
